I'd just like to get a little discussion going with the topic above. My single best purchase for my reef tank is upgrading my skimmer to the sca-302. I could have easily continued to use the one I had but didn't and it's paid off double at least already. I think my apex will slowly take the place of that soon though.

For my current tank, I would say the best investment so far is putting the sump in the basement. That whole package makes things so much better and easier to work on, and it takes the smell/noise out of the living room.

The rocks... It's a one time buy, I don't have to feed them, clean them, watch them, anything really, and I'm not addicted to buying more.

Leds I believe the toms lifter given to me is going to come in handy to. Been using it to slow drip and compensate for evap in one of my tanks.

Can't really settle on one particular item but I can say that the general ability to automate is a game changer for me. ATO, controllable lights and pumps (Ecotech), real-time insight into pH and Temp (Apex controller), dosing...all make keeping the tank (mostly) a joy by removing a lot of the hassle and assuring consistency for the livestock.
Over the next few months I intend to continue automating...additional dosing, feeding, ORP, spill monitoring, etc.
