Was wondering of I should put all my sand in my tank, and add my mixed water into tank or should I fill the tank then add the sand. Was planning on adding sand and filling w water and aerating the water with a heater in tank. Not sure which is the best way. I figure adding when full would take a long time for sand to settle.

I would mix the saltwater in the tank then add baserock then ad sand. The water will be cloudy for a few days but if you decide to keep burrowers they wont undermine your rockwork.

if you use a funnel connected to some hose you can guide it to where you want it and reduce the clouding

The funnel is a good idea. My only concern with adding the sand after is that it would get all over the rocks and make a real mess.

Not sure why people add sand after you have water? What a mess! Water after you add sand and rock, slowly over something like a rock or plate like Rob mentioned.

I was just thinking that mixing 100+ gallons of in the tank would be easier than doing the bucket brigade thing. Yeah though rock then sand then water is good too. A pump from the mixing bin to the tank would be handy.

yeah lot easier to let the ro water pour into tank then keep yarding over the buckets

I usually us my return pump. You don't need it until your tank is full anyway.

why pour it in a small container and then mix and then pump as many times it takes to fill your tank. when you can fill tank from rodi throw salt in and turn on a circulatory pump right in tank. of course you wouldn't fill it all the way up so it overflows when adding rock sand and such. if your just starting a tank seems easiest way

A pump from the mixing bin to the tank would be handy. in this hobby easier is never better. if you add the sand after the water it will separate when it settles. this means the smaller particles of sand will settle on the larger particles of sand then the smaller silt/mud has to settle threw your whole sandbed for it to even work as a dsb. not to mention you clog every pore in the rock you spend big $$ on... if you want to mix the water in the tank your better off putting all your sand and rock in and mixing the water then you might kill off a ton of bacteria but it will still be better than adding sand and rock after water

I ended up putting all my sand in 3" w 2" of aggregate on top of it. Put 4 air stones in and heater. Then put in 60 gallons of mixed water. Now just waiting on Ro filter to make more. I'm heating water before I put in tank also.
