I spiked my mag levels and the green lawn melted away.

I think 1400 is normal levels and 1700 is spiked but how much you can up it depends on what your mag levels are now? You have to raise it slower when you get above that 1400 mark and some corals in your tank probably won't appreciate it.
I've never done this myself and don't recommend it either. I've done some reading about it, But I also don't like using meds, chemicals or any other quick fixes because from my experience what ever you "quick fix" won't be fixed long.

Be careful of adding chemicals to solve a problem as sometimes you can make things worse, I always recommend addressing the cause of this issue. In this case I am confident it is the water being used.

I have small tuxedo urchin and a lawnmover blenny they both devour the stuff. Frags should be glued down, ive found quite a few where they shouldnt be and assume its the urchin.

What works for me is Mexican turbo snails, tuxedo urchins and emerald crabs. I've tried a peroxide dip for hair algae and it works so so. I've had frag plugs come in with hair algae, did a Bayer dip and the hair algae never came back.
