New to fraging and was looking for some suggestion. Display tank consists of 65g w/ 29g sump/refugium (filled to app. 25g). I'm not really crazy about setting up another tank (also have 50g fresh system)Would it be a bad idea to set up a rack system in the sump? Lighting is a 96watt pc. Wondering if there would be any bad effects? Also wondering what everyone uses for their plugs? I've seen plastic ones and rocklike disks. Any suggestions there?

You can use most any frag plugs you want to. A lot of people use plugs for frags that are going in the rock work, and disks for frags that are going on substrate? This is all preference and you can use any plug or disk you want to. To be honest you don't have to use plugs or disks! You can just use rubble rock and most people will be happier with that then anything else.

I use aragonite sand plugs...the ease of use of a plug, but you can easily reshape them when you go for the permanent placement so you don't see it.

Hey thanks all on ideas. I tend to agree with the rubble idea (looks more natural).Does anyone have an opinion on using refugium for frag tank?

I use every kind of frag plug. Say like zoas. I like putting them on regular plugs so people can scrape them off and put them where ever or they can leave them in the sand and grow a nice cluster. I like reef plugs cause they are made from sand and are easy to cut. Then it can crumble. But rubble is nice too. It's practicly free.
On the fuge frag tank. It depends how nice your fuge is. Mine is full of algae and stuff I don't want in my display. All my algae good/bad grows down there keeping my display free of it. So it's up to your system and you.

Ok so now I'm really confused. I have been internet researching for a while but I have a lot of questions that I can't seem to come up with answers for. What I'm really looking to do is set up a low budget tank to grow out some frags from corals that are over growing my reef. Not looking to make a fortune, but maybe get some more advanced equipment or some of the beautiful frags I see some of you have posted. Besides a tank, I'll probably be using equipment already on hand.
1. Sterile system? Unfortunately unless I put in fuge, it can't be hooked to main system. So I've seen seperated frag tanks with and without fish. Which is the wiser choice? 2. Size? Does the size really matter besides water stability or how many plugs can be in it? 3. Lighting? At this time I can't really afford to buy new lights (ro/di is more important). I currently have 3 sets unused: a 24" pc w/ coralife 50/50 bulb, a marineland led fixtue (made for small tanks up to 30" long), or (2x) 24" Marineland Single Bright led fixtures. Which would be best (depending on tank size, of course)?
May have more questions down the road, but that's all I can think of for now. Any suggestion, comments or concerns will be appreciated!

1.) Fish are not essential to a tank. I'm more of a coral person so fish are more of an afterthought. There are lots of frag tanks with no fish. You also run a lower risk of introducing disease to the tank.
2.) The size of the tank doesn't matter but small tanks are hard to keep stable and a lot of work. Don't underestimate that.
3.) Lighting all depends on tank size and what corals you're keeping. Most likely the Marineland is going to be your best bet.

#1-fish or no fish? I personally like to have at least one fish in the tank but everyone is different. If this is going to be a Sps only frag tank? I'd say no fish, if it's going to be mostly softies then I'd put fish in it. because the softies will appreciate the nutrients the fish add to the tank.
#2-tank size will have to be determined by you and how much up keep you want to do and also how much room you want for frags. (40g breeder is a good size)
#3- lighting,(watts will be easier to know when you choose your tank size) If I was setting up a frag tank and I had all those extra lights, I'd sell the extra lights and get the funds to buy the light I want for the tank. (I've heard very little good things about all marineland led lights)

Hey thanks for suggesting selling extra equipment. Guess I really never thought of it. Never really had the right channels.

Might get lucky and sell them right on craigslist? Take a few pictures of how the leds make colors pop and put them on your ad on craigslist.

Hey thanks for the ideas. Unfortunately frag tank is probably on hold after ich explosion in display. May just start out making a couple frags in display tanks to sell to pet pro or Vance for now to get everything back up and beautiful (miss my fish). My fiancee, Donna is an avid yard saler and always finds me tank deals in the summer. Will probably wait and see what she can come up with. Need to get an ro/di unit too.

I have a stand alone Ro unit that could easily have a Di chamber added on to it? Wouldn't break the bank on you for it either. But I don't live kinda far away
It's a Kent Maine Ro unit if your interested in it can also post pictures at some point if needed
