Yes but both are safer than blue legs. Scarlet gets bigger.

Astraea snails are a complete waste of hobbyists money! Many stores sell thousands of these snails as a cheap gimmick to get you in the door to spend more money every few weeks. Banded trochus snails are much better snails to keep. They are stronger and faster so that hermits can't usually grab them. 90% of the time they can flip themselves over! even on sand. They cost a bit more but when you figure in not having to flip them over all the time or replace them often it's well worth the extra expense. www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_display.cfm?c=497+526+564&pcatid=564I got a few of these today, and they are awesome! Super strong!

I had a heavy out break of Hair algae a few months back, I put in 24 Astrea snails and 10 tiny blue leg hermits in and two weeks later the tank is spotless of hair algae. I will stick with my Astrea snails thanks. Yes they sometimes land upside down, if I can get to them I flip them if no they become food. Every six months I take a trip to Unique aquaria during their group buy and replenish what I lose. At 60 cents a piece I think they are well worth it.

I've also had the same Astrea snails forever. I think I've had to buy about double the amount of hermits but my snails have done great. Rarely ever even get flipped upside down? Any snails I have lost have been fatalitys caused by hermit crabs that are to lazy to find there own house so they kill a snail and steal there's. I always have extra shells laying around?
