So for the past month or so some things have been looking a little funky in my tank. I got better for a little bit and then i did a 20 gallon water change and it seems that ever sense things I've been looking really bad and some things are dying. My nitrates were really high, but they're pretty much always really high and it's never been too much of an issue. I've made it a point to do to water changes over the last 3 or 4 weeks and my night rates are down to about 40 or so, I have no ammonia and no nitrites. What is causing my stuff to die? I lost a colony of acans and my other two are barely hanging on, I've lost three heads of my hammer coral and there are several other had that are pulled in as much as they can be, one of my frog spawns died all except one baby head, I have a toadstool leather that has a weird color over the top of it ( it almost looks like the skin is shedding or something) and there are a few Pally's and zoas that don't want to open up at all. I don't know what's going on, the only thing I can think of is like a bacteria or something? I did try to dip a few into coral rx but it didn't seem to do anything.... any ideas? Did you check your phosphate levels?

Have you found the source of why your levels are so high in the tank?

+1 on phosphate if you haven't had it checked, I had corals do the same thing in my 46, tested phosphate over 2. As soon as I got it down to 1 things started looking much better.

How has the ph been? I have been battling a low ph in mine, lost a couple more sensitive things, and a few others have looked funny.

Have you done a large water change since losing the elegance?

I don't think I have a phosphate testing kit.... I can check the ph though. Add far as the reason for my nitrates, I'm pretty sure it's my dsb. When I originally set up the tank, I knew nothing about Saltwater and had a friend helping me... I ended up landing live sand from two different people... (one of which left a wet bag of sand for me out in the middle of November on the porch in the cold) at the time I didn't realize that you should rinse the ever living crap out of sand that has already been used in an aquarium... anyways I took those two things of live sand plus some crushed coral and put it all in my tank. That's where I think the nitrate problem comes from and everyone on here believes it to be the issue well. :-( I can't wait to afford to get all the stuff I need for my 120 Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using proboards

Lindsay, I have a Phos test if you wanted to swing by and borrow it. From my experience the Hanna Checker phosphate test is the most accurate I have used.

Have you checked all your water parameters? Low alk will definitely hurt and kill corals. Have you checked your RO water for phosphates?
